For most patients, the nurse becomes the primary contact in the medical world. The nurse serves as the liaison between doctor and patient. She must understand the doctor’s instructions and the patient’s concerns. Her communications skills focus on both giving and receiving information as well as creating an environment of confidence. Both verbal and nonverbal communication skills aid nurses in their work. A soothing voice while answering questions and a friendly smile both send a message to the patient. Clear descriptions of symptoms aid the doctor in choosing a course of treatment.
