Predisposing Factors of Lung Abscess

Lung abscess is a type of coagulation necrosis of the pulmonary tissue and formation of cavities (more than 2 cm) containing necrotic debris or fluid caused by microbial infection.

This pus-filled cavity is often caused by aspiration, which may occur during altered consciousness. Alcoholism is the most common condition predisposing to lung abscesses.

Lung abscess is considered primary (60%) when it results from existing lung parenchymal process and is termed secondary when it complicates another process e.g. vascular emboli or follows rupture of extrapulmonary abscess into lung.

Predisposing Factors of Lung abscess

  1. There is a source of respiratory tract infections.
Infection of the mouth, larynx tumors infected, bronchitis, bronchiectasis and lung cancer are infected.
  2. Endurance respiratory disturbance
In laryngeal paralysis, aspiration of gastric fluid because it is unconscious, esophageal cancer, and sillia movement disorders.
  3. Mechanical obstruction of the airways due to aspiration of blood clots, pus, which clog the gear, food and bronchial tumors. Abscess localization depends on an upright position, the material will flow into the aspiration medius lobe or posterior segment of the inferior lobe of right lung, but in a state of lying aspirates will go to the apical segment of superior lobe or superior segment of the interior lobe of the right lung, only occasional aspiration to flow into left lung.

Lung abscess can only emerge when the microorganisms that enter the lungs together with the material inhaled. The inhaled material will clog the airways with atelectasis which arise due to be accompanied by infection. If only the germs that enter it, it will arise pneumonia.
