How to Care for Cholera


Cholera is a disease of acute intestinal tract infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, the bacteria enter the body through contaminated food or drink.

The bacteria secrete enterotoxin ( poison ) in the intestinal tract so that there is an acute diarrhea accompanied by vomiting and great, consequently a person in just a few days to lose a lot of fluids and get in on.

If dehydration is not treated immediately, it will continue towards hypovolemic and metabolic acidosis in a relatively short time and can cause death if treatment is inadequate.

Giving ordinary drinking water will not help much, cholera patients requiring intravenous fluids or sugar and salt in the form of intravenous fluid mix of both.


The spread of cholera

Cholera can spread as an endemic disease, epidemic, or pandemic. Although many large scale studies conducted, but the condition of this disease remains a challenge for modern medicine. Vibrio cholerae bacteria multiply and spread through feaces of man, when feces containing the bacteria contaminating the river water and so the other person who comes in contact with the water are at risk of cholera that too.

For example washing hands are not clean then eat , wash vegetables or foods with water containing cholera bacteria, eating fish that live in water contaminated with cholera bacteria, even the water (like a river) water used by others who live nearby.


Cholera Disease Symptoms and Signs

In person at feaces found cholera bacteria for 1-2 weeks may not feel significant complaints, but during the attack infection, sudden diarrhea and vomiting with a fairly serious condition as acute attacks that cause vague kind who experienced diarrhea.
However, in patients with cholera there are some things that is displayed signs and symptoms, among others are :


Watery diarrhea, and plentiful, without preceded by heartburn.
Feaces or excrement which was originally colorless and odorless liquid turns into a cloudy white with no foul odor or fishy, but as sweet piercing.
Feaces ( liquid ) that resemble rice water, when deposited will issue white clots.
Diarrhea occurred many times and in considerable amounts.
Abdominal muscle spasms can also be felt, accompanied by severe pain.
The amount of fluid that comes out will cause dehydration with signs such as ; rapid heart rate, dry mouth, physically weak, sunken eyes, hypotension, and others that if they do not immediately get a replacement handler lost body fluids can lead to death.


Prevention of Cholera

How to prevent and terminate a transmission of cholera is the principle of environmental anitation, especially hygiene water and sewage (feaces) in place that meet environmental standards. Others are drinking water that has been cooked first, wash your hands thoroughly before meals with soap / antiseptic, wash the vegetables with clean water, especially vegetables that are eaten raw (fresh vegetables), avoid eating fish and shellfish that is undercooked.

When the family member affected by cholera, should be isolated and immediately get treatment. objects soiled with vomit or stool of patients must be sterilized, insect flies (vectors) other infectious soon be eradicated. Cholera vaccination can protect people who have direct contact with patients.
